The Fight or Flight Response and specific Purpose

The Fight or Flight Response and specific Purpose

I have established a definite purpose to learn and integrate the law of Napoleon Hill's 1925 edition of "The Law of Success." My commitment has led me to taking a lesson per week, reading that lesson through every day, and then writing an report about it. My understanding was that I would good learn and assimilate the law in the 1925 edition of "The Law of Success."

The first lesson is on definite Purpose. Since my field is mind-body psychology, what I know in this realm comes presents itself as I study "The Law of Success." This morning, the understanding of the body's purpose to live came to mind. I work with habitancy who struggle with illness. This means that, at times, the understanding of the body having a definite purpose to live is contradicted by such things as cancer and other disorders in which you could say the body is killing itself.

Where I do see the body's definite purpose to live is in the fight or flight response. Before I go into that, let me mention that having a definite purpose for your life is your internal lighthouse or beacon guiding you through life. If you have a definite purpose, you value your thoughts, words, actions and each decision based upon either or not it is in accordance with your definite purpose.

The fight or flight response is activated while time of crisis. If something is coming at you, your body instinctively responds by getting out of the way. One beautiful spring day I was walking in the hill country of Texas. I was not paying a great deal of attentiveness to where I was going, which can get anything in problem at any point in his or her life. Where my inattention got me was in front of a rather large rattle snake sunning itself on the road.

Two things saved me from being bitten. The first was the snake was not coiled when I came upon it. The second was that my fight or flight reflex was activated. My body reflexively jumped backward further than I even knew was possible. The snake's fight or flight reflex was also activated. It was ready to fight and I was fleeing. By the time the snake was coiled, and manufacture a great deal of noise with that rattle, I was already out of what it determined its danger zone. (By the way, I've since learned, if you come upon a snake ready to strike, jump sideways. It can trip a pretty good length if it is springing level ahead.)

When the fight of flight reflex is activated, the body instinctively stops any physiological processes not needed for survival. Since you don't need to reproduce if you're dead, sexual response is shut down. So is digestion. The fight or flight reflex also marshals all its vigor to support the structures needed to get out of the way. Blood moves speedily into the arms and legs. Respiration quickens so more oxygen gets into the blood stream. Adrenalin flows to supply the vigor and focused attentiveness needed to save yourself. Your senses are sharpened. The body pours all it has into the immediate life and death crisis.

When you have a definite purpose in life, and the deep desire to accomplish it, you do what is requisite to accomplish your goal. You growth that which gets you where you want to go and eliminate that which distracts you or moves you away from your goal. This means you focus upon the thoughts, feelings and activities which move you transmit and eliminate the time wasters, thoughts and beliefs which pull you away from your ultimate goal.

Your fight or flight response activates reflexively. You have to train yourself to riposte in a similar manner to accomplish your definite purpose in life.
