The world of curative equipment can be vast and involved place with all the different machines and tools. They all play their part in finding after patients and all need to be operated correctly. Doctors and some nurses are trained in using in the curative equipment and that can take years. This description will highlight only one of the many pieces of equipment and it will be explained.

A spirometer is a piece of equipment that measures the volume of air that passes in and out of the lungs. It it used over a duration of time to measure the respiration flow rates. The basic function for the spirometer is to test the condition of the patients lungs.It would pick up asthma, emphysema and bronchitis. If a outpatient is suffering shortness of breath the spirometer would usually identify the cause.

There are some types of spirometer each doing slightly different things.

- Windmill type - this is also known as the spiropet spirometer. It is mainly used to measure forced vital capacity without the use of water. It is lighter and more portable.

- Incentive Spirometer - This one is used to enhance the functioning of lungs

- Peak flow meter - his is used to measure the drive of a patients breathing.

- Pneumotachometer - This one uses a mesh to measure the differences of the flow of gases and pressure. It also allows the man to breathe in fresh air while it is being operated.

- Whole body - This one provides a more strict determination but the outpatient is enclosed in a small space as it is operated.

There are also smaller more movable spirometers widely available. These are most likely to be digital and far easier to read.
